Part 1 in 2 part series of the website checklist every company should follow

The last 10% testing before launching a website is as important as the first 90% coding and design put together.

In the digital world, your website is the door to your virtual office. Despite this, perhaps in an extreme excitement to launch their business or brand, many companies neglect some of the major aspects that are essential for good website development. However, whether they use a web development company or a web development team in a startup to develop the website, these little nuances can make or break an enterprise’s business.

With this in mind, here are the essential checks that you must perform to ensure your website is perfect before it goes live.

A. Design and Appearance

The design of a website should invite people to use your business. But, is it inviting enough? Everything visual on your website should display your theme and should give the visitor a feel of what your company’s vision is. Therefore, before you roll out your website, make sure to once again consider the design elements, including the color scheme, typography, text alignment, and touch-supported icons.

Another important element is your website’s favicon. If you do not yet have one, get it designed as it will ensure a more professional look. Also, if your website offers subscriptions or newsletters, you must have opted for an RSS feed. However, make sure that the feed can easily be located by the visitors. Try giving a small RSS icon on the address bar at the top.

B. The 404 Error Page

Every website will have a 404 error some or other time during its lifespan. Whether the error is caused due to an incorrect URL address or a link that is out of date, an erroneous message can make you lose your customers. So, your web development team should be prepared for such instances. For this, you can either display a message that provides details to the visitor or you can provide a link on the error page that redirects the visitor to your website.

C. Content Editing and Proofreading

Of course, if you are ready to launch your website, you must have already written content for it. Still, it is always a good idea to double check it for grammar, punctuation, and spelling errors. These checks should include all the web pages, the messages on pop-ups, and the clickable text.

As the father of advertising, David Ogilvy, says, “great headings sell 80% of your business”. So, use main headings and subheadings, even if it means hiring a copywriter at the last minute. In addition, you should make sure that you highlight your unique selling proposition.

D. Search Engine Optimization

A client only comes across the design and content of your website, once he or she lands on your website. But, search engine optimization (SEO) is needed to direct the visitor to your website. So, try to make smart use of titles, captions, and meta tags. That being said, avoid stuffing in too many keywords just for the sake of a high search engine ranking. The rule of thumb is to strike a balance and insert keywords in such a way that they blend in with the content smoothly. Use of canonical URLs is also a good idea.

E. Backup

Hackers do not give you any warnings and neither do server failures. Therefore, a wise decision would be to keep a backup of your website. If you plan to make the backup manually, it is best to schedule regular backups, for example monthly or quarterly. Also, nowadays, there are many automatic backup software, such as Backblaze and iDrive, available.
